TED-tip #91 Andrew Stanton (Toy Story, Finding Nemo, WALL-E) over de kracht van Storytelling

Iedere maandag tipt Mindnote een TED-presentatie met interessante en/of handige ideeën over muziek, edutainment en e-cultuur. Tijdens deze jaarlijkse conferenties houden allerhande invloedrijke denkers een lezing van maximaal twintig minuten over hun eigen expertise. Deze voordrachten staan allemaal online en gaan in eerste instantie over technologie, entertainment en design (TED), maar gaan steeds vaker ook over wetenschap, kunst, economie en maatschappelijke onderwerpen. 

Filmmaker Andrew Stanton (Toy Story, Finding Nemo, WALL-E) heeft zijn publiek met zijn films weten te raken. Hij kon hen laten lachen of huilen en vertelt onderstaande video de achterliggende regels over storytelling. Hij wijst er onder meer op dat: ‘The audience actually wants to work for their meal. They just don’t wanna know that they’re doing that. That’s your job as a storyteller. To hide the fact that you’re making them work for their meal. We’re born problem solvers. We’re compelled to deduce and to deduct. Because that’s what we do in real live. It’s this well organized absence of information that draws us in. …/… Make the audience putt things together. Don’t give them four, give them 2 + 2. The elements you provide and the order you place them in is crucial in whether you succeed or fail in engaging the audience. Editors and screenwriters have known this all along.’
